Homeowners often aren't sure where preventative maintenance ends and structural intervention begins. In historic neighborhoods like the Highlands, Cherokee Triangle, and Old Louisville, mistaking mortar joint erosion for brick failure leads to either expensive over-scoping or quick DIY patches that seal trapped moisture inside your masonry.
When It's Tuckpointing
Your bricks are sound, but the mortar between them is powdery, recessed more than 1/4 inch, or falling out in chunks. We grind the spent mortar back cleanly and pack new, vapor-permeable lime mix to restore the weather seal without disturbing the wall.
When It's Brick Repair
The brick faces are spalling (flaking off), cracking through the body, loose, or step-cracking along settling lines. This requires carefully chiseling out damaged units and tying in period-matched salvage brick with compatible historic mortar.
The Mason's Rule: If you are unsure, never attempt a surface patch with hardware-store Portland cement. Modern cement is too rigid for historic Louisville clay brick and will force soft heritage bricks to shear off during Kentucky freeze-thaw cycles. An accurate visual assessment is always free of charge.
